Full release calendarThe simplest UK routes are the two with a UK base: ACE (Banbury, from £18 a card for everyone, £12 for members) and CGC (London office, from £14 + VAT a card with a 25-card minimum). PSA is the best-known label but prices in US dollars from $59.99 a card; its announced London receiving centre had no opening date on 16 October 2026, so UK collectors use PSA group-submission dealers or post to the US. Add return postage and, for cards graded abroad, possible import VAT and a carrier handling fee.
Grade a card only when all three are true: it is genuine and in near-perfect condition, slabbed copies at the grade you can realistically expect sell for clearly more than raw copies, and that gap is bigger than the full cost of grading. Postage changes the sum: in our worked example five cards to CGC's London office cost about £29 a card all in, but one card sent alone costs about £67. If you want the card for your own collection, the protection and certainty may be worth it on their own.
Card condition is judged on four things, front and back: centring, corners, edges and surface. The single worst flaw sets the grade. Whitening on edges and corners moves a card from Near Mint down to Lightly Played and below, scratches rule out Near Mint, and a crease means Played at best. Sites use different words for the same grade, so always check which scale a seller is using.
The most reliable check that does not damage the card is the edge: genuine cards have a thin black or dark grey layer in the middle of the card stock, visible side-on. Then check that the back is a deep, dark blue (never pale), that "Pokémon" has its é, that the energy symbols and fonts match a genuine card, and that it measures 63 x 88 mm. The light test is unreliable. If you buy a fake from a UK trader you are usually entitled to a refund.
